Ke$ha Celebrates National Coming Out Day

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/kesha_/artist.jhtml">Kesha</a> has joined forces with the Human Rights Campaign to help celebrate National Coming Out Day on Tuesday (October 11). The pop singer created a special message T-shirt, featuring a purple zebra, that <a href="/news/articles/1653432/kehas-we-r-who-we-r-video-is-hot-and-dangerous.jhtml">proclaims "We R Who We R,"</a> the title of her hit anthem about individuality. The shirts sell for $35, with all proceeds supporting the HRC's work to achieve equality for the LGBT community. According to the <a href="http://www.hrc.org/press-releases/entry/human-rights-campaign-unveils-t-shirt-collaboration-with-kesha" target="_blank">HRC website</a>, only 1,000 shirts will be produced. Others are also using the day to bring awareness to LGBT issues. Several notable celebrities will be honored by the Equality Forum, which is hosting an event and profiling notable LGBT members in pop culture. As <a href="http://miamiherald.typepad.com/gaysouthflorida/2011/10/lgbt-history-month-honors-ricky-martin-wanda-sykes-ryan-murphy-pedro-zamora-27-other-icons.html#ixzz1aTgr8yl4" target="_blank">LGBT History Month</a> rolls on throughout October, Ricky Martin, Wanda Sykes, "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy and Pedro Zamora, a former "The Real World" castmember turned AIDS activist, all will be profiled by the organization. "We're the only minority worldwide that's not taught history at home, in school or religious institutions," said Malcolm Lazin, Equality Forum's founder and executive director. "Like every group that's been marginalized, it really helps to make the case why we should take real pride in ourselves and our community." Since launching the program five years ago, over 200 icons have been profiled, including Jane Lynch, Lady Gaga and Neil Patrick Harris. Lazin called LGBT month "empowering and life affirming." The message comes amid increased awareness about young people being bullied, including MTV's <a href="http://www.athinline.org">A Thin Line</a> campaign. The MTV film <a href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/disconnected/series.jhtml">"DISconnected,"</a> which premiered Monday night, focuses on issues in a world where technology controls personal lives. "I see the viciousness of people every day," said <a href="/news/articles/1672289/jersey-shore-vinny-disconnected-fight-negativity.jhtml">"Jersey Shore" star Vinny Guadagnino</a> on the "DISconnected" after show. "I kind of want to be a soldier in the field, so to speak, and try to combat the negativity with a positive message. I want to help open people's eyes up, like this movie does, to the negativity." <b>Check out the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/MTVDisCONNECTED">Facebook</a> page for <a href="http://www.mtv.com/shows/disconnected/series.jhtml">"DISconnected."</a></b></p>

‘Jersey Shore’ High Five: Coping With Vinny’s Absence

Plus, the Situation has a birthday tantrum and Snooki learns a new word.
By Jim Cantiello

Pauly D on Thursday’s episode of “Jersey Shore”

With Vinny gone, the “Jersey Shore” cast spiraled out of control! Deena danced so hard that her hair extensions needed to be surgically removed, Snooki was half a body shot away from the morgue, and the Situation “left the show” because nobody cared that it was birthday. Here are my five favorite moments from this week’s “Jersey Shore”:

5. A Tribute to the Fallen
This week’s episode picked up where last week’s left off. Vinny went home to Staten Island to calm down after his anxiety flare-ups. You know, re-charge his batteries and get away from reality-TV cameras for a while. Wait, what? MTV sent a camera crew home with him? Get better, Vinny!

Back in Seaside, Vinny’s housemates paid tribute to their fallen comrade in unique ways.

Ron? “In honor of Vinny, I’m wearing skinny jeans!” Sweet! Respectful! Well done, Ron.

How about you, Pauly? “I’m gonna smash this girl in Vinny’s bed in honor of Vinny leaving the house.” That’s … something!

Snooki and Deena, you’re up next! “Meatball day! I love gay dudes! You can dance with them, and then at the end of the night, you’re not expected to give them …” — well, you get the idea. Forget Harvey Milk. I think the gay-rights movement has a new hero.

And last but not least: the Situation, who honored Vinny by leaving the house! Except, instead of walking out for mental-health reasons, he did so because his castmates didn’t make him a birthday cake. America, don’t pay attention to the millionaire toddler having a temper tantrum.

4. Mrs. Sitch
Speaking of the Situation, he might be on the path to “wife-ing” perennial hookup Paula. And if it happens, I vote Sammi as maid of honor.

To quote Sammi: “I like Paula. She might be dirty and grimy and skanky and disgusting, but she’s pretty cool.”

To the happy couple!

3. Presented Without Comment
Deena: “I know I’m not the smartest crayon out of the box but this isn’t rocket scientists. We can start a party!”

2. Snooki the Word Nerd
Snooki learned a new word! “My ass is protruding! Protruding!”

Careful, Snooks! Don’t wake up the scary ancient vocabulary monster!

“It’s the word of the day: ‘protruding.’ Let’s use it all day.”

JWoww asks, “In what context?”

[Cut to Madonna's "20/20" interview: "Look it up."]

Alas, the vocab monster is now awake.

1. How Do You Say “DTF” in Bosnian?
On Pauly’s b-day, fellow birthday boy Mike passed off a hot Bosnian girl to his buddy. But as soon as she got back to the house, it became painfully obvious that when “Jersey Shore” airs in Bosnia, they cut out all the sex stuff.

[The Bosnian girl wants to talk all night rather than hooking up and is confused why other girls are there. Pauly gets mad, calls her a cab home and kicks her out.]

First a war, now this. Will Bosnia ever catch a break?

For continuing “Jersey Shore” coverage, be sure to check in with MTV’s Remote Control blog.

Elizabeth Smart: Engaged!

Elizabeth Smart, who was kidnapped by Brian David Mitchell from her home in 2002 at age 14, only to be found nine months later, is engaged, her father Ed confirms.

“We’re very excited for her,” Ed said Friday. “She told us at home last Saturday.”

“I wasn’t really surprised. They’ve been so happy together. We’re thrilled. We’re looking forward to her moving on to this next stage and leading a very happy life.”

Ed, who is staying mum on wedding details, including the groom’s name, says Elizabeth “wants to keep it very private and feels very strongly about that right now.”

Elizabeth Smart Pic

The Salt Lake Tribune reports that wedding registries at Williams-Sonoma and Pottery Barn list an July 1 wedding date for Elizabeth Smart and Matthew Gilmour.

So, that’s probably his name.

Chris Thomas, a rep for Elizabeth, says he can’t confirm the wedding date or the name of Smart’s fiancé, but says, “I know they’re looking at a summer wedding.”

“There are a lot of details to still be worked out. She’s very public in her child advocacy work, but has decided she wants to keep her personal life private.”

Congratulations to Elizabeth, her fiance and her family!

Robert Plant And Alison Krauss Win Grammy Album Of The Year

Raising Sand, from Led Zeppelin vet and bluegrass superstar, wins five Grammys on Sunday night.
By James Montgomery with MTV News staff

Photo: Kevin Winter/ Getty Images

<P>"I'm bewildered," <a href="/music/artist/plant_robert/artist.jhtml">Robert Plant</a> said onstage as he accepted the <MTVNLINK type="news" id="1604580">Grammy Album of the Year award</MTVNLINK> with <a href="/music/artist/krauss_alison/artist.jhtml">Alison Krauss</a> on Sunday night. "In the old days we would have called this selling out, but it's a good way to spend a Sunday." He was probably one of the few who were surprised, because <i>Raising Sand,</i> which won five trophies at Sunday night's show, is in many ways the perfect <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/grammys/">Grammy</a> album. It features two respected veterans, a critically lauded producer, some sandpaper-and-velvet vocals and a baker's dozen of time-tested standards.</p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:338316" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D338316" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p> You're probably familiar with Robert Plant from his <a href="/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</a> days, and you might be aware of producer T-Bone Burnett's work on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack (it won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 2002). And if you don't know who Alison Krauss is, she possesses a haunting set of pipes and is one of the meanest fiddle players in the world. Oh, and she's won 21 Grammys, more than any other female artist and the seventh-most in history. Really, she's the key to <i>Sand</i>'s success, and not just because of her voice (or her fiddle playing). She and Plant first met in 2004, at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame tribute to legendary bluesman Leadbelly, and the former Zeppelin man was amazed by her knowledge of American Roots music &#8212; so much so that they began kicking around the idea of recording an album together. Three years later, <i>Sand</i> was released. And while Plant possesses the more famous voice, the album's finest moments radiate from Krauss. Whether she's getting bluesy on Little Milton's "Let Your Loss Be Your Lesson" or entwining with Plant's husky voice on songs like "Please Read the Letter" and Roly Salley's winsome "Killing the Blues," she more than carries her end of the bargain. And perhaps that's also due to producer Burnett, who handpicked the 13 songs the duo cover on <i>Sand.</i> His arrangements are sparse &#8212; giving the two voices ample room to breathe &#8212; yet dense, warm and crackling at the same time. It's a testament to his work that he's often given just as much billing as Plant and Krauss on the project … and it's certainly justified. To date, <i>Sand</i> has sold more than 1 million copies, heaped tons of acclaim and actually earned a Grammy last year &#8212; "Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)" took home the award for Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals. One expert was surprised not by the album's success, but by the fact that it's actually quite a good album. "At first, the album seemed like a vanity project. … Two names, clearly a one-off record, didn't have to be any good, you know?" <i>New York Times</i> music critic Jon Caramanica said. "Led Zeppelin fans would buy it because of Robert Plant, Alison Krauss would get a check. But it actually turned out to be a really thoughtful, really <i>good</i> record. So when you combine all that with the fact that the Grammys love to lionize one of their own, I could really see it taking home some awards." </p>

Lindsay Lohan or Megan Fox: Who Would Make A Better Elizabeth Taylor?

The battle to play the infamous Elizabeth Taylor is heating up with two big name ladies in the running but are either of them worthy of playing the iconic star? Well that is what I want to know. Lifetime is currently working on a biopic about Elizabeth Taylor and both Lindsay Lohan and Megan Fox are reportedly in talks to play the screen legend. Larry Thompson, the executive producer of the film titled Liz and Dick, admitted that both ladies are in the running, as well as some other unnamed actresses. He also shared that this is casting for Hollywood royalty, so it is very serious. All of the mumbo jumbo formative crap aside, I seriously want to know who would make a better Liz Taylor? Personally I think that neither of the so called actresses are worthy of playing the role. Taylor was a talented beauty that earned the respect of Hollywood and oh so many more. To do a movie about her or in honor of her with talentless actresses playing her is a disgrace and I think it will wreck the movie. I would rather see a talented unknown in the role than those two yahoos. I [...]

Seven Rules For Dating Bachelorette Emily Maynard

Emily Maynard has been confirmed as The Bachelorette, a full six months before the summer premiere and well before filming has even begun on the new season.

While ABC has not officially announced that the 26-year-old North Carolinian will star on the show, it’s been reported by People, EW, E! News and numerous others.

It’s happening, and the casting was likely leaked early on purpose.

That’s because Emily Maynard is a different kind of Bachelorette, and guys had better know what they’re in for. Here’s a little tip sheet for prospective suitors …

E. Maynard

  • Ricki, Ricki, Ricki. Maynard and her 6-year-old daughter, are incredibly close. So much show that production is moving to their hometown of Charlotte, N.C. Any fellas coming on The Bachelorette are really wooing two women.
  • The past matters. Maynard lost her fiance, NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, at age 19. Days after Ricky’s death, Maynard learned she was pregnant. She named their only child after him, and remains close to his family.

  • The more recent past matters. While it didn’t work out with Brad Womack after The Bachelor, he and Maynard are still close. Womack “taught me that I have it in me to love again,” Emily said. “He’s always going to be a part of my life.”

Emily Maynard, Brad Womack Pic

  • Image matters. As a mother, Emily is not likely to be sexualized or over-the-top in her pursuit of a good time on the show. Guys should act accordingly.
  • Patience is a priority. A beautiful Southern belle, Maynard can find a date any time she wants, but a lasting relationship is a different story. Any potential mate must be prepared that this courtship will be an unconventional one.
  • No douchebags please. Seriously, as offensive as Bentley Williams was on Ashley Hebert’s season, a return by that ass clown would be 10 times worse.
  • Hope you like Charlotte. It’s a vibrant, booming city. One you’re likely to live in for a long time if you want to be with Emily. Just saying.

Eva Longoria: Grauman?s Chinese Theater Chick

Stepping out for an exciting evening, Eva Longoria was spotted at Grauman?s Chinese Theater for the premiere of ?Underworld: Awakening? last night (January 19).

Joined by her boyfriend Eduardo Cruz, the ?Desperate Housewives? cougar looked to be very much in love as she strolled past the paparazzi.

And it seems Eva is ready to be completely rid of anything reminiscent of her marriage to Tony Parker.

Earlier this week, Ms. Longoria paid a visit to Dr. Tattoff, a famous tattoo removal specialist, to get her ?Nine? ink taken off of the back of her neck.

Beyonce, Diddy Design Re-Election Swag For President Obama

‘Runway to Win’ effort will donate proceeds to president’s campaign.

<P>Beyonc&#233; was clearly keeping very busy in the weeks leading up to the birth of <I>Billboard</I> record-setting baby <a href="/news/articles/1677163/beyonce-jay-z-baby-blue-carter-glory-song.jhtml">Blue Ivy</a>&#8232;. Among the projects she participated in is "Runway to Win," in which a number of celebrities and fashion industry icons were tapped to design T-shirts and other swag for President Obama's re-election campaign. According to <a href="http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2012/01/obama-re-election-campaign-fashion-designers.html" target="_blank"><I>New York</I> magazine</a>, the effort was spearheaded by <I>Vogue</I> editor Anna Wintour, who wrangled a number of her friends and fashion world peers to design shirts, tote bags, scarves and bracelets for the Obama campaign. In addition to Beyonc&#233;, Diddy and hip-hip impresario Russell Simmons, others who've thrown in include First Lady Michelle Obama fave designer Jason Wu, as well as Rachel Roy, Narciso Rodriguez, Marc Jacobs, Diane Von Furstenberg, rag &amp; bone, Altuzarra, Alexander Wang, Tory Burch and Tracy Reese. <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:722792/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D722792%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A722792%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyoncé</a>'s <a href="http://store.barackobama.com/runway-to-win/beyonce-tina-knowles.html" target="_blank">effort</a>, designed in conjunction with her mother, Tina Knowles, is a $45 white T-shirt with the phrases "yes we can," "words do inspire" and "transform a nation together," randomly scattered across the front in different fonts. Simmons' and Diddy's shirts have not yet been revealed. The current fundraiser is a sequel of sorts to a similar campaign in 2008 called "Runway to Change," and the proceeds will go to the Obama Victory Fund. Pre-orders are being taken now and all the items are slated to go on sale online on February 7. Though much of the attention has been focused on the increasingly nasty battle among a group of Republican politicians fighting to gain their <a href="/news/articles/1677067/new-hampshire-primary-mitt-romney-wins.jhtml">party's presidential nomination</a>, as MTV's <a href="http://powerof12.org/" target="_blank">Powerof12</a> has reported in both <a href="/news/articles/1676704/obama-supporters-tuning-out-iowa-caucus-noise.jhtml">Iowa</a>&#8232; and <a href="/news/articles/1677058/new-hampshire-obama-supporters.jhtml">New Hampshire</a>&#8232;, the Obama re-election campaign is in full gear as well.</p>

Stranger Danger

My sister recently had a talk with my four-year-old nephew Jack about strangers. Here’s how it went:

SISTER: Now, Jack, if a stranger says, “Come here, I want to show you something,” what do you do?

JACK: I turn around and run!

SISTER: If a stranger says, “Come here, I want to give you some candy,” what do you do?

JACK: I turn around and run!

SISTER: If a stranger says, “Come here, I want to show you my puppy,” what do you do?

JACK: Oh, I love puppies…

Fake Source Claims: O.J. Told Me About Khloe!

O.J. Simpson is almost definitely not the father of Khloe Kardashian.

But if you listen to the quotes invented by a source The National Enquirer made up in its controversial new cover story, you may begin to have some doubts. Simply put:

“O.J. told me Khloe’s his child,” this anonymous insider tells the tabloid. “It was the big secret that no one in the two families would discuss. And Robert admitted he and Kris were not having sex at the time Khloe was conceived. O.J. bragged about his sex life and many female conquests, which he said included some of his best friends’ wives.”

Khloe Kardashian in VegasIt's The Juice!

It is true that Kris Jenner was friends with the accused murder, via her husband at the time, but their relationship was never the same after Nicole Brown Simpson was found dead in 1994. It’s unclear why.

Adds this totally real source:

“He used to tell us way back – even before he and Nicole got divorced – that he had a love child with the wife of a wealthy family. But at the time of Khloe’s birth, it would have been devastating for the news to come out that America’s biggest sports hero had fathered a love child.”

It’s true. Thank goodness O.J. has kept his reputation intact since this time.

The Juice is currently in jail on an armed robbery conviction and is eligible for parole in 2017. We may need to wait until then for a definitive answer to the question of paternity.

Ewan McGregor And Eva Green Fall In Love In New ‘Perfect Sense’ Featurette

Ewan McGregor and Eva Green charmed audiences in their apocalyptic love story “Perfect Sense” at Sundance a year ago, and IFC Films ended up picking up the rights to the movie soon after. The film is currently available on SundanceNOW and Cable VOD, and it’s finally headed into theaters on February 3. Ahead of that, [...]

Gina Carano ‘In Control’ Of Male ‘Haywire’ Co-Stars

‘I didn’t have any issue [doing] this fight scene with a woman, because I was the underdog,’ Ewan McGregor tells MTV News.
By Kara Warner

If you like your movies with a lot of action, kick-ass fight sequences and actors who do their own stunts, look no further than this week’s new thriller “Haywire” to satisfy those needs.

The concept for the film was born after director Steven Soderbergh saw footage of MMA fighter Gina Carano in the cage, which inspired the Oscar winner to build a film around her. “Haywire” revolves around a black-ops supersoldier (Carano) who seeks the ultimate revenge after she is betrayed by her colleagues, played by the very capable Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas.

MTV News recently caught up with Carano, Tatum and McGregor to discuss the very realistic fight sequences and how the guys were more than game for getting their butts kicked by a woman.

“The physicality, that was fun to me. I didn’t have to hurt anybody,” Carano said of the difference between the film’s choreographed fights versus her MMA matches. “I didn’t have to worry about getting choked out, and there were no egos with any of the actors. They all wanted to do all their own stunts, and a lot of people around me were like, ‘Gina, that’s not normal. You’ve got some beautiful people to work with and a beautiful first experience.’ ”

“To be totally honest, she’s better than every guy I’ve ever fought, really, other than one, and he was a strike force fighter as well,” Tatum admitted of his co-star, with whom he shares an intense bone-breaking exchange during the first five minutes of the film. “I can say this without any amount of trying to say it for the movie: I challenge anyone to come and fight her or even move with her. She’s by far the best athlete I’ve ever gotten a chance to move with. She’s so strong and in control, it’s just ridiculously unprecedented in my opinion.”

McGregor added that he didn’t even think about the man-vs.-woman factor, only that it was the most appropriate scenario for his manipulative, weasel-like character.

“There was a slight difference in our fight scene together. For me, I didn’t ever have any issue with the fact that I was having to do this fight scene with a woman, because I was the underdog,” he said. “There was no question that I was going to get killed if I didn’t manage to get away.”

Check out everything we’ve got on “Haywire.”

He reportedly listed "Men's Central Jail" and his booking number in the space on the appeal document where a lawyer would normally list a firm's name or contact information. TMZ also reported that although Murray seems to be without a lawyer, he is still in communication with Nareg Gourjian, one of the attorneys who represented him during his manslaughter trial. "This case presents a gold mine of issues for any appellate lawyer," Gourjian told TMZ. "Dr. Murray is confident that the Court of Appeal will vindicate him." Following the guilty verdict, Murray's lead defense lawyer Ed Chernoff told CNN, "What matters most right now is trying to keep Dr. Murray from taking up a prison cell in this community. That's what we're focusing on right now, and we'll deal with an appeal after that." <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">Murray was sentenced to four years</a> in jail Tuesday, but due to overcrowding, he's unlikely to serve his full term. </p>

‘American Idol’ Recap: Season 11, Episode 1

So are you guys familiar with this whole American Idol thing? I’m really not, although tonight’s show did stir up some vague memories of a show I watched some of back in 2002. Don’t worry, though; it seems very similar to The X Factor, whose first U.S. season I just finished weecapping last month. So I should be able to walk you through this.

Swizz Beatz’s Megaupload Shut Down By Feds

Action is among largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States, Department of Justice confirms in statement to MTV News.
By Rob Markman

Megaupload’s problems continue to mount. On Wednesday, news broke that the popular file-sharing site had come under fire after Universal Music Group took issue with a promotional video featuring Universal Music Group artists like Kanye West, will.i.am and Diddy. Now, the site run by Swizz Beatz has been shut down.

On Thursday (January 19), the federal government took the action against Megaupload.com, and also arrested several members of the company, hitting them with multiple racketeering and copyright infringement charges, according to a statement issued to MTV News by the U.S. Department of Justice. A federal indictment alleges that the site, which allows users to transfer large files, has generated more than $175 million in criminal proceed and costs copyright-holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies, albums and other materials.

Swizz Beatz, Megaupload’s CEO, was not charged in the indictment which was handed down on January 5, and as of now, it is unclear how the producer/rapper’s involvement with the company will play into the case. The Associated Press reported that Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom (also known as Kim Schmitz) was arrested Thursday in New Zealand along with three others.

The Department of Justice said that this is among the largest criminal copyright cases ever brought by the United States. The news broke a day after major websites like Wikipedia and Google protested against the U.S. House of Representatives’ Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, and the Senate’s similar Protect IP act.

Representatives for Swizz Beatz had not responded to MTV News’ request for comment at press time.

Jay-Z Makes Post-Baby Appearance At 40/40 Reopening

Ashanti, Spike Lee, Irv Gotti and more of Hov’s high-profile friends toast the new dad at renovated NYC club.

<P><b>NEW YORK</b> &#8212; <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jay_z/artist.jhtml">Jay-Z</a> has a lot to celebrate. A little over a week ago, he and wife <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a> welcomed daughter <a href="/news/articles/1676906/beyonce-jay-z-baby-born-ivy-blue.jhtml">Blue Ivy Carter</a> into the world, and on Wednesday night, big poppa Hov had a bit of business to attend to at the reopening of his 40/40 Club. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:726477" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The stars came out and walked the red carpet before entering the redesigned sports bar. Jay's buddies Warren Buffet, Spike Lee, Steve Stoute, Kevin Liles and New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia all attended. "Hov always has big parties, so I'm definitely looking forward to going inside and mingling and jingling," Ashanti said. "We here at the reopening of the 40/40; we about to have a couple of drinks, a lot of beautiful women, New York City, the new joint &#8212; you already know," Wale said excitedly. Jigga's 40/40 closed last summer to undergo renovations and is now back with an updated look. While everyone was excited about the new club, baby Blue Ivy was a hot topic on the carpet. Ashanti couldn't be happier for the new parents, but when asked if she had caught a bit of baby fever herself, the "Foolish" singer made it clear that she isn't ready to be a mother just yet. "Oh no, boo-boo, no baby over here. I say it enough in my records," she said with a boisterous laugh. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:724136.id:1676907" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Music mogul and record producer Irv Gotti, who has three kids of his own, told MTV News that he shared some fatherly advice with his friend Jay-Z, but he wouldn't reveal any of it. "I'll keep that between me and Hov," Irv said. Then at that very moment, Jay breezed past the carpet trying to dodge reporters and flashing lights, but he did stop to give his old friend some love. After he and Gotti slapped each other five, Jay made a beeline for the 40/40 doors to get the party started.</p>

Childish Gambino’s ‘Heartbeat’ Video Fits Song’s ‘Mood’

‘Fans should be able to check this out and just see my visualization of the song,’ ‘Community’ star-turned-rapper tells MTV News.
By Rob Markman, with reporting by Ross McAlpine

Don’t call Childish Gambino‘s upcoming “Heartbeat” clip a video; rather, it’s a reflection of how the actor-turned-rapper was feeling when he recorded it.

“I do not really have a set of things in mind. I thought the best way to convey the feeling that’s in the song was to be confused ourselves,” Childish Gambino, a.k.a. “Community” star Donald Glover, told MTV News last week during a break from filming the clip in Van Nuys, California. “I guess when it’s all said and done, fans should be able to check this out and just see my visualization of the song.”

“Heartbeat” — from CG’s debut album, Camp — is an electrified breakup song equipped with pulsating drums and buzzing synth chords. The rapper, who is better known (for now) for his role as Troy Barnes on “Community,” enlisted director Kyle Newacheck to shoot the visual. Newacheck directed an episode of the NBC comedy back in 2009.

In the month leading up to his November release, Childish told MTV News that Camp was a “labor of love.” With the independently released LP, Gambino aimed to tell a story. “The biggest compliment I can give it is that I like it more than everything else I’ve done,” he said. “I think it’s a cohesive piece, and I wanted to tell a whole story with it. Hopefully, the whole album is like a book or a novel where [there's] a through line.”

“Heartbeat” is simply a chapter in that story, and its video will be reflective. “This is kinda like the mood of the song,” Gambino said. “I wouldn’t say it’s so much a video as much as it is just a mood.”

What are you expecting from Childish’s “Heartbeat” video? Let us know in the comments below!

However, unlike B.I.C., Aisha was never credited on her dad's track. The site further reports that as of press time, the song's reign on radio was expanding. It has the highest new entry on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, with 1.7 million audience impressions on 54 radio stations. In a twist of fate, the song marks her dad's 107th entry, mirroring her Jan. 7 birth date. Produced by Pharrell, it is a joyous and heartfelt song about fatherhood from the normally guarded Brooklyn MC. "The most amazing feeling I feel/ Words can't describe the feeling, for real/ Baby, I'll paint the sky blue/ My most greatest creation was you," he raps about his newborn daughter. There's no shortage of heartache on the track (with references to B's previous miscarriage and his own absentee dad), but in the end, the song really focuses on the <i>glory</i> of fatherhood. He even goes on to reference his wifey's own pop-star legacy: "You're my child with the child from Destiny's Child/ That's a hell of a recipe." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:723695/cp~id%3D1676907%26vid%3D723695%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A723695%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center></p>

<P>From young love to established romantic empires, 2011 was all about PDA. Some of La La Land's most A-list couples weren't shy about flaunting the love they share. From musicians to actors to everyone in between, the last 12 months were all about sharing the love. As the year winds down, MTV News is reflecting on some of our favorite couples of the year. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:703500" width="240" height="211"></div><p> <big><b>Britney Spears and Jason Trawick</b></big><br> The couple walked red carpets, gave each other shout-outs at <a href="/news/articles/1669846/britney-spears-vmas-best-pop-video.jhtml">awards shows</a> and even got naked together in <a href="/news/articles/1672795/britney-spears-criminal-video-director.jhtml">Britney's "Criminal" video</a>, but it wasn't until December that they decided to make it official. After two years of dating, Spears and Trawick took their relationship to the next level, with confirmation that Jason <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">put a ring on it</a>. The pair celebrated their love and their impending nuptials in Las Vegas. Their engagement sparked headlines and left Spears "glowing." <a href="http://newsroom.mtv.com/2011/12/27/who-was-your-favorite-celebrity-couple-of-2011-poll/"><big><b>Who is <i>your</i> top couple of 2011? They went to <a href="/news/articles/1658832/justin-bieber-selena-gomez-vanity-fair-oscars.jhtml">events</a> together, and Bieber lavishly <a href="/news/articles/1671462/justin-bieber-selena-gomez-staples-center.jhtml">rented the Staples Center</a> just to watch "Titanic." And when they weren't chilling out, they were giving shine to each other's hard work. Or bringing each other gifts. Remember when Bieber showed Selena his <a href="/news/articles/1669881/vmas-justin-bieber-selena-gomez.jhtml">pet snake, Johnson</a>, at the VMAs? Yes, we knew you wouldn't forget. <big><b>Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson</b></big><br> The two "Twilight" stars seem poised to make our favorite couples lists for years to come. While in years past, they've remained under the radar, this year they came out of their shell and opened up about one another in interviews. When Beyonc&#233; stepped out at the VMAs, her expanding midsection and flashy performance was the ultimate <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">pregnancy announcement</a>. Jay-Z didn't seem to mind all the attention. He celebrated the baby news in the audience with his pal Kanye West. <big><b>Wiz Khalifa and Amber Rose</b></big><br> Amber Rose rebounded from her relationship with Kanye West by falling in love with <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/wiz_khalifa/artist.jhtml">Wiz Khalifa</a>. These two kept everyone talking and they don't seem to mind the attention, or spending lots of time with one another. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/347755691907862"><b>Did we forget your favorite couple of 2011? A decade into her career, the pop megastar reinvented herself this year as the ultimate Femme Fatale and made a big commitment to Jason Trawick.

<P>Maybe <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a>' lucky number is 30. The singer turned 30 this year, marking the landmark birthday on December 2 with a fan-voted MTV News tournament that crowned <a href="/news/articles/1675289/britney-spears-tournament-winner-30th-birthday.jhtml">the Best Britney Video of All Time</a>. But her 30th year also proved to be an incredibly successful period in her career. <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:720934/cp~vid%3D720934%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A720934" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> For the first time in a while, she seemed comfortable being the pop megastar that she is. More than a decade into her career, Spears re-emerged as a <a href="/news/articles/1675474/britney-spears-femme-fatale-favorite-album.jhtml"><i>Femme Fatale,</i></a> giving fans a fist-pumping album, embarking on a flashy tour and dropping more memorable music videos. Britney Spears fandom was reenergized as the singer came out of her shell, opening up about this phase in her career as well her personal life in several high-profile interviews. So it's probably not surprising that Spears will cap off the year at #4 on MTV News' <a href="/news/articles/1676177/newsmakers-2011-lady-gaga-amy-winehouse.jhtml">Top Newsmakers of 2011</a> list, just behind Lil Wayne. "When I was younger, I was busy, busy, and I was always singing and dancing all the time. I was just really creative," she recalled in the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/638813/britney-hits-the-studio-with-william.jhtml#id=166112">MTV special "I Am the Femme Fatale."</a> "That's when my mom realized I'm a really creative person." She let that creativity shine over the past 12 months. From <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/britney-spears/624145/hold-it-against-me.jhtml#artist=501686">"Hold It Against Me"</a> to <a href="http://www.mtv.com/videos/britney-spears/639722/till-the-world-ends.jhtml#artist=501686">"Till the World Ends"</a> to her Chris Marrs Piliero-directed "I Wanna Go" and "Criminal," Britney made headlines every time she dropped a music video. But no vid stirred up as much controversy as her <a href="/news/articles/1672795/britney-spears-criminal-video-director.jhtml">"Criminal" clip</a>, which featured real-life boyfriend <a href="/news/articles/1676120/britney-spears-is-engaged.jhtml">(now fianc&#233;) Jason Trawick</a> &#8212; and his abs. "At the end of the day, Jason killed it," Piliero told MTV News of Trawick's cameo. "That was one of those things I was really stoked [about], as much as I went into it like, 'Wow, he's not an actor. This is going to be interesting,' but I really do like a challenge, and I really do like the idea that I'm a director and my job is to direct and get the performance. For me, it was a fun challenge to be like, 'I'm gonna make sure that you are awesome,' and he was." Between video shoots, Spears hit the road with <a href="/news/articles/1668836/nicki-minaj-britney-spears-tour.jhtml">the likes of Nicki Minaj</a>, Joe Jonas, and DJ Pauly D. Spears fully embraced her sensuality on the <i>Femme Fatale</i> Tour, a spectacular show full of costume changes, elaborate stage setups and stunning mini-films. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:638813.id:1661123" width="240" height="211"></div><p> And while much of the 2011 VMA buzz was about <a href="/news/articles/1669849/beyonce-pregnant-vmas.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;'s baby bump</a> and <a href="/news/articles/1669843/lady-gaga-you-and-i-video-music-awards-performance.jhtml">Jo Calderone</a>, Spears stole the spotlight by walking away with a Moonman for Best Pop Video and the prized <a href="/news/articles/1669873/britney-spears-vma-tribute.jhtml">Video Vanguard Award</a>. She also had tongues wagging after an onstage kiss from Jo (a.k.a. Lady Gaga), just before she was honored with an electrifying dance tribute that highlighted some of biggest career moments. "It was really crazy. I had no idea what to expect," Spears told us backstage at the VMAs. "The kids were amazing and so entertaining, and it was a really fun night. It was really cool. I was like, 'Wow, that's really sweet!' " As 2011 came to a close, Spears wrapped up her tour, and MTV News threw her a birthday bash in the form of the <a href="http://www.mtv.com/content/news/2011/britney30/index.jhtml">"30 Videos for 30 Years"</a> tournament. The competition was heated but in the end, Spears' iconic "I'm a Slave 4 U" took home the prize. And just when it seemed things couldn't get any better, <a href="/news/articles/1676167/britney-spears-jason-trawick-engaged-timeline.jhtml">Britney confirmed she was engaged</a> to Trawick after dating for two years. She showed off her Neil Lane ring during a celebratory weekend in Las Vegas. <b>MTV continues our <a href="http://www.mtv.com/specials/best_of/">Best of 2011</a> coverage by looking back at the biggest pop-culture stories of the year. Blue Ivy Leaves Hospital: How Much Is A Picture Worth?

Experts weigh in on how and when Jayoncé will release photos of their baby girl.

<P>We've already heard her on <a href="/news/articles/1676945/blue-ivy-carter-new-jay-z-song-glory.jhtml">Jay-Z's new track, "Glory,"</a> but fans might already be wondering just when we might get to see the rapper's firstborn with his pop star wife, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/knowles_beyonce/artist.jhtml">Beyonc&#233;</a>. On Tuesday morning (January 10), Blue, B and Jay had left Lenox Hill hospital in New York City, <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/beyonceacute_jay-z_take_baby_blue_ivy/285320?cmpid=sn-000000-twitterfeed-365-topstories&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=twitterfeed_topstories&dlvrit=48939" target="_blank">E! News confirms</a>. E! reports that high security was taken to ensure that no photos were snapped as they left the hospital and headed home. <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:724228/cp~id%3D1676907%26vid%3D724228%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A724228%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> There are several ways that <a href="/news/articles/1676906/beyonce-jay-z-baby-born-ivy-blue.jhtml">days-old Blue</a> might be introduced to the world, and <a href="/news/articles/1676944/beyonce-jay-z-blue-ivy-experts-rumors.jhtml">MTV News talked to experts</a> to get the lowdown on how they think the first photos of her will debut. And they even suggested how much they think the whole business might be worth. "I think they're terribly private about it," HuffPost celebrity columnist Rob Shuter explained. "I think if they do anything, they'll take the Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes way that they did with Suri and they'll do it on the cover of a monthly like <i>Vanity Fair</i>. But I don't even think they'll do that. They'll definitely, in my opinion, not be selling a picture to the highest bidding weekly magazine. That's just not their style." With editors scrambling for the authorized photos of the newborn and her parents, there are also tabloids scrambling to get some image of Blue, whether or not B and Jay have anything to do with its release. "In the case of unauthorized photos, they're typically not the best quality. So if it was sort of your average photo, there's always people who will pay up to a million dollars for that type of photo," said David Caplan, who has worked at celebrity magazines like <i>Star</i> and <i>People</i>. "Again, it really depends on the quality, and typically it's the hard-core tabloids who will buy that because they won't be in the running for the real baby photos, which will likely go to either sort of like a <i>People</i> or even a monthly. "I think with Beyonc&#233; there's no guarantee she'll sell her photo to a weekly magazine, I can see her choosing to do it in <i>Vogue</i> and <i>Vanity Fair</i>," he added, noting that going that route ensures she can control the entire rollout. <i>How do you think Beyonc&#233; and Jay-Z will release photos of their baby girl? Leave your comment below!</i> <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:723695/cp~id%3D1676907%26vid%3D723695%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A723695%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center></p>

‘Twilight: The Musical’ Vamps In New York

Harry, Ron and Hermione make ‘Twilight’ debut in the off-Broadway parody.
By Amy Wilkinson

NEW YORK — When “Dreamgirls” helmer Bill Condon took over direction of “The Twilight Saga,” more than a few cheeky journalists wondered if he’d treat fans to a bloodsucking song-and-dance extravaganza. Alas, vogueing Volturi weren’t meant to be — at least on the big screen. They have, however, found a temporary home on the New York City stage in the form of “Twilight: The Musical.” The off-Broadway parody production premiered Monday night at the New World Stages, raising money for the charity Blessings in a Backpack.

Written by Ashley Griffin and directed by Gabriel Barre, “Twilight: The Musical” is, for now, staged as a concert reading, meaning that the actors hold scripts throughout the show. But the cheat sheets did little to diminish the enthusiasm of the oft-hilarious production.

A group of eight actors play more than 30 roles, with some pulling quadruple and even quintuple duty (such as standouts Lauren Lopez and Jenna Leigh Green). With her bobbing ponytail, zip-up hoodie, skinny jeans and sullen expression, Meghann Fahy (“Next to Normal”) is a dead ringer for Bella Swan (or, at the very least, Kristen Stewart’s portrayal of Bella Swan), while “Wicked” actor Colin Hanlon looks perfectly pained as Edward Cullen. Jared Zirilli (“Wicked”) spends the entire second act shirtless, portraying Jacob with the kind of earnestness that’s made Taylor Lautner the object of many a teen’s fever dreams.

The show opens much as the “Twilight” movie does, with Bella’s monologue about her impending death followed by the cafeteria scene and the upbeat track “Looking for Something.” (Sample lyrics: “I think I see a Fork stuck in my road,” “We’re standing on the twilight of something good.”) The first act hems closely with its source material, including all the requisite scenes: Edward’s biology class freak-out, Bella’s car accident and the bookstore gang-up. Much of the dialogue comes straight from screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg’s script, too, albeit with much-welcomed embellishments. (Charlie to Bella: “I know it’s awkward starting in the middle of a semester, so I got you a truck!”)

But things take a canon-twisting turn about two-thirds of the way through the first act when Hermione, Ron and Harry show up. Yes, someone got “Harry Potter” in our “Twilight.” Instead of Victoria, James and Laurent, Hogwarts’ finest play the villains here. The meta levels reach 11 when the wizards mistakes Edward for Cedric Diggory. And so it is that Ron tracks Bella down in her old ballet studio and is done in by the Cullen coven, leaving Hermione to avenge the death of her beloved. The first act closes on Bella’s birthday — the surprisingly bloody scene from “New Moon.”

The second act opens with a freshly shorn Jacob (his wig somehow even mangier than Lautner’s) singing with his pack. From there, the production speeds through the last three books of Meyer’s series, compressing much of the story in favor of cramming it all in. Despite the odd pacing, the production sang thanks to details only a true fanatic could relish. Edward’s sparkling-in-the-sun effect is achieved with a glittery bodysuit hidden underneath the actor’s button-down like Superman’s spandex. The iconic apple from the book’s cover hangs limply (and obviously) from a springing wire gizmo as Edward tries to suavely hand it to Bella. Not to mention the actors muster plenty of fourth-wall-breaking furtive glances, letting the audience know they are in on the joke.

But the tongue-in-cheek vibe is abandoned late in the second act for a sobering bit of moralizing from Harry, who comes to Bella in a dream sequence asking if it was all worth it. “You were willing to sacrifice everything to get a boyfriend,” he says. “In the end, you destroyed yourself.” Point taken, Harry Potter. But what a buzzkill.

If you weren’t able to make the one-night-only charity benefit, don’t fret: Work is being done to bring the production to the New York stage for good.

Conrad Murray Sentenced To Four Years In Jail

Former Michael Jackson doctor faces another hearing in January to potentially provide more than $101 million in restitution to the Jackson family.
By Gil Kaufman

Dr. Conrad Murray listens as he sits in court during his sentencing for the involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Judge Michael E. Pastor sentenced Murray to four years in county jail for his involuntary manslaughter conviction of Jackson.

<P>Former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> doctor Conrad Murray was back in a Los Angeles courtroom on Tuesday morning (November 29), where he was ordered to serve the maximum of four years in county jail. The cardiologist, who was found guilty of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter November 7, was facing up to four years in state prison in the death of the pop icon, but due to recent changes to alleviate overcrowding in California prisons, the judge in the case said he was was unable to send the doctor to state prison for his crime. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:714975.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor had leeway in the sentencing, with options ranging from probation to the full sentence, but in a lengthy ruling from the bench he said that Murray's lack of remorse and negligent behavior argued for the highest possible penalty. <b><big><a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank">Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</a></big></b> "He is and remains dangerous … the request of probation is denied, the court imposes the high term of four years imprisonment in this case," Pastor said during the 90-plus minute hearing. Murray will serve his time in the Los Angeles County Jail, as well as pay nearly $900 in court fees and face another hearing in late January 2012 on a request by the prosecution to provide more than $101 million in restitution to the Jackson family. <a href="/news/articles/1673937/conrad-murray-guilty-verdict-michael-jackson-expert-reaction.jhtml">Murray was found guilty</a> by a jury of one felony count of involuntary manslaughter after prosecutors convinced them that Murray's reckless use of the surgical anesthetic propofol led to the singer's death. Before Pastor's ruling, prosecutors not only asked for the maximum sentence, but also that Murray pay Jackson's children more than $100 million in restitution, which is the amount they believe the singer would have earned had he lived to perform his "This is It" comeback tour, in addition to nearly $2 million in funeral expenses. Prior to handing down the sentence, a peeved-looking Pastor answered a defense question regarding a last minute notice from the prosecution noting that two previous cases suggest that involuntary manslaughter could be considered a "serious" offense and thus should subject Murray to federal prison time. "I don't think these cases have any impact on the realignment statute," Pastor ruled, referring to the new rules regarding sentencing that he believed superseded the earlier cases. Attorney and friend Brian Panish read a <a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">statement from the Jackson family</a> at the beginning of the proceedings. "There is now way to adequately describe the loss of our beloved father, son, brother and friend," Panish said. "We still look at each other in disbelief, is it really possible that he is gone? As Michael's parents we never could have imaged we would live to witness his passing. It is simply against the natural order of things. As his brothers and sisters we will never be able to hold, laugh, or perform again with our brother Michael. And as his children, we will grow up without a father, our best friend, our playmate and our dad. We are not here to seek revenge, there is nothing you can do today that will bring Michael back. But we will keep the love in our in our hearts that Michael embodied throughout his life. His passion was for unifying the world through the gift of his artistry. We respectfully request that you impose a sentence that reminds physicians that they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder and cast aside their Hippocratic oath to do no harm. As we all know from this tragedy, doing so can have devastating results. The bible reminds us that men cannot do justice they can only seek justice. And that is all we ask as a family and that is all that we can ask for here." As in the past, Murray, 58, sat stone-faced, listening to the statement and prosecutor David Walgren's quick rehashing of the facts in the case. "He looked out for himself and not Michael Jackson," Walgren said, going on to argue why the court should deny the defense's request for probation. He quoted Pastor's own comments about the dangerous nature of Murray's action following the verdict as evidence that Murray should face a more serious penalty than probation. He said Murray's abandonment of a vulnerable Jackson in the time of the singer's need, as well as the planning the doctor underwent to procure the propofol and to not keep clear medical records about their administration were also reasons to deny probation. "It is the people's position that prison is warranted," Walgren said, adding that it was Murray's negligent actions before, during and after Jackson's death, as well as his lack of remorse and failure to take personal responsibility &#8212; as evidenced in clip from a documentary interview nine days before the verdict in which he denied culpability &#8212; that call for the longer term. A number of Jackson's family members, including mother Katherine and siblings LaToya, Jermaine, Randy and Rebbie, were reportedly on hand for the court date. When asked by the judge if the new sentencing laws allowed Murray to be sent to prison for the full term, Walgren said they did not. While the defense did not call any witnesses to testify &#8212; and Murray did not wish to speak &#8212; defense attorney Ed Chernoff did reference more than 30 pages of support memorandum from friends, family and patients in his brief statements. He agreed that Murray's actions do warrant punishment, but asked how the court viewed the book of Murray's life, versus one chapter. "He shouldn't have done it," he said of Murray's actions. "We're going to be honest about vulnerability. Michael Jackson was a drug seeker and he sought it out from Dr. Murray who was wrong in providing it." Chernoff painted Jackson as a rich, powerful person who had the means to do whatever he wanted and asked the court to consider Murray's life before the doctor began working for Jackson. He described Murray's currently cloistered existence in jail in protective custody and asked, "but what about the rest of his life? What about before Michael Jackson asked for propofol?" he wondered, noting that for 56 years Murray had never run afoul of the law and had raised a family following his destitute beginnings on the island of Grenada. "Does any of that matter at all?" Chernoff asked dramatically as he unspooled his client's rise from poverty and what he described as a professional life dedicated to helping poor and disadvantaged patients. "I think it should matter," he answered. "But when the glow of vengeance has faded, he still is someone else's problem. And Dr. Murray can do things for the community on probation that he could never do sitting in that room." Pastor noted that he had discretion in sentencing in this case and that he took into account that both sides have said that Murray's actions did result in the death of Jackson, though pointedly noted that Murray did not take responsibility in the <a href="/news/articles/1674174/conrad-murray-michael-jackson-documentary.jhtml">MSNBC documentary</a> that aired days after the guilty verdict. Because the case involved criminal negligence, which requires more than carelessness or mistake in judgment, but reckless actions that result in death, Pastor said it was important to focus on those factors. "This is not a question about what might have happened or what if someone else had been involved if not for Dr. Murray," he said. "That is an insult to the medical profession. The fact is that Michael Jackson died because of the action of and the failure to perform the medical duties of Dr. Murray." The judge said he had taken into account the full story of Murray's life, but said the "unconscionable lies" to medical personnel and a series of "inconceivable" decisions the doctor made on June 25, 2009 jeopardized the life of his patient and superseded what the doctor had done before. "Why give probation to someone who is offended by the whole idea that that person is even before the court," he said, referring to a "failure of character" on behalf of Murray, most specifically, a secret recording the physician made of the singer that Pastor characterized as a type of "insurance policy" against a potential future conflict between the doctor and patient that seemed beyond the pale. The day before the sentence was handed down, Murray's mother, Milta Rush, reportedly wrote a letter to judge Pastor asking him for mercy, saying, "his [Murray's] compassion and his soft heartedness for others led to this dilemma." Pastor said he could find no reason to grant probation to Murray, whose actions he called a "gross, continuing deviation" from medical standards, and who he claimed is and remains a danger to the community. Without the legal authority to send Murray to state prison, Pastor said, "the court has determined that the appropriate term is the higher term of four years imprisonment … because I find that Dr. Murray had abandoned his patient, who was trusting him … he has absolutely no remorse." A future date in January was set to begin discussing the prosecution's request for restitution. After being given credit for 46 days of time served and good time credit, Murray was led out of the courtroom in handcuffs. The Los Angeles County Sheriff will determine how much time Murray will actually do in his equally overcrowded jail and Murray's lawyers have indicated that they plan to launch an appeal at a later date.</p>

Katy Perry Stands By Her Man

Russell Brand pictures Katy Perry pictures arrested assault paparazzo twitter

I told you yesterday about Russell Brand being arrested after allegedly getting into an altercation with a paparazzo. Here are the pictures of Russell and Katy Perry arriving at the airport before the scuffle broke out.

And here’s what Katy had to say on twitter about the incident:

If you cross the line & try an put a lens up my dress, my fiancé will do his job & protect me. #standbyyourman #don’tf**kwiththeBrands.

If it’s true that the paparazzo was trying to get a picture under Katy’s skirt, then the paparazzo is the one who should’ve been arrested! Talk about crossing the line. And I’ve heard of paparazzi trying to do that, so it doesn’t sound so improbable to me.

Hopefully this will be resolved without too much fuss.

Katherine Heigl may have won an Emmy for her work on Grey’s Anatomy — but after her very public falling out with the ABC drama, she’s the last person we’d expect to want to return to the show. But the One for the Money star told E! Conrad Murray Not Expected To Serve Full Four Years

Legal expert Mike Cavalluzzi tells MTV News he isn’t surprised by sentence but doesn’t think it’s justified.
By Gil Kaufman

Dr. Conrad Murray sits in court after he was sentenced for the involuntary manslaughter of singer Michael Jackson at the Los Angeles Superior Court on November 29, 2011 in Los Angeles, California. Judge Michael E. Pastor sentenced Murray to four years in the Los Angeles County Jail for the involuntary manslaughter of Jackson. A restitution hearing has been scheduled for January 23, 2012 to determine the amount of restitution to be paid to the Jackson family.

<P>Though he dodged a potential four-year prison term, former <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/jackson_michael/artist.jhtml">Michael Jackson</a> physician Conrad Murray was sentenced to an equal amount of time in Los Angeles County Jail on Tuesday (November 29) in the death of the pop singer. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:714975.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> But the same overcrowding problems that spared the cardiologist from doing time in a federal pen might also save him from serving his entire sentence in county as well. Shortly after the <a href="/news/articles/1675062/conrad-murray-sentence.jhtml">sentence was handed down</a> by Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, Los Angeles Sheriff spokesman Steve Whitmore told <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/jackson_family_reacts_conrad_murrays/277336" target="_blank">E! News</a> that Murray would likely end up serving "a little less than two years." Due to overcrowding, most county jail sentences are immediately cut in half, and given the 46 days credit Murray has already been given, he is looking at even less than that. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/mtvnews/posts/199210760161755" target="_blank"><b>Do you think Conrad Murray deserved the maximum sentence? Let us know on Facebook.</b></a> Murray's lawyers said afterward that they believed the sentence was unnecessarily long. "Yes, of course [Judge Pastor] was harsh. He gave the stiffest penalty he was entitled to give under the law," Murray's attorney, J. Michael Flanagan, told reporters. "He was openly hostile. … [Murray has] led 56 years of exemplary life. He was really dreading [sentencing]. I think anybody would dread going into it. He's an honorable man, and he'll get through this. The family is suffering more than Dr. Murray is. … Dr. Murray is the provider in that family." Pastor had leeway in the sentencing, with options ranging from probation to the full sentence, but in a lengthy ruling from the bench, he said Murray's lack of remorse and negligent behavior called for the highest possible penalty. "He is and remains dangerous … the request of probation is denied, the court imposes the high term of four years imprisonment in this case," Pastor said during the 90-plus-minute hearing. Los Angeles-based criminal defense attorney Mike Cavalluzzi told MTV News that he wasn't surprised by the sentencing but that he didn't believe it was justified. Cavalluzzi said Pastor had incentive to give the full sentence because of the prominence of Jackson and his family and to create the perception that he is tough on crime. "He gets that perception by sentencing him to the max while not having to surrender the defendant to the full sentence," said Cavalluzzi, who was not involved in the case. "He gets the self-satisfaction of being perceived as being tough on crime and making the Jackson family happy, but I don't think it was a fair sentence." Cavalluzzi said when deciding prison versus probation, judges have to look at someone's criminal history and whether a person is likely to complete the terms of their probation, which he believes Murray would. "I'm not seeing aggravating factors here, and I think it was just a chapter in [Murray's] life and he does not have a history of being a mercenary doctor always after money, but of being a good, responsible doctor who was seduced by the celebrity and money that Jackson offered," he said. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:708788.id:1673923" width="240" height="211"></div><p> As to why Pastor gave such a dramatic, lengthy explanation for why he was sentencing Murray to the max, Cavalluzzi said the judge has to have a justification for his actions in the public record. "Because he doesn't have the discretion to give a high prison term, [Pastor] has to justify his sentence in the record and have very specific reasons for it. I don't think there's any way that anyone truly believes that from this day forward Dr. Murray truly represents a threat to society. That's just ludicrous." And while he doesn't agree with the four-year term, Cavalluzzi said the high-profile nature of the case and the glare of the media could have played into the sentence. "It probably gives [<a href="/news/articles/1675068/conrad-murray-sentencing.jhtml">Jackson's family</a>] great comfort to have someone to blame," he said. " 'If not for this awful man, my son, brother, father would be alive.' But it's not fair to do that and it feels like a capitulating judgment in favor of feeding the emotional needs of the family." Upon leaving the courthouse, Michael's brother Jermaine, when asked if the four-year sentence was enough, shook his head and said, "No." Mother Katherine Jackson told local TV station KTLA, "Four years is not enough for someone's life. It won't bring him back. But at least he got the maximum, and I thought the judge was very, very fair." The prosecution, however, was satisfied with the ruling. "We're pleased. That's what we thought was appropriate. The judge obviously agreed with us," deputy district attorney David Walgren said. "It was our position that it was not a simple, one-time mistake; it was a series of mistakes culminating in the abandonment of Michael Jackson when he died … the judge agreed with that sentiment. A brother and a son and a family member was killed, and whatever the sentence may be, the family of the victim deserves justice. And we did everything to bring them that justice." As for how much time Murray will spend locked up, Cavalluzzi said it is likely to be less than two years and, frankly, he predicted, the doctor could be out even sooner than that. "He might be eligible for house arrest very quickly," he said.</p>

<P><a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/u2/artist.jhtml">U2</a> didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them from raking in plenty of cash. The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive <a href="/news/articles/1653264/u2-talk-emotional-360-tour-tease-new-album.jhtml">360 Tour</a> moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Swift's country contemporary Kenny Chesney came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million. Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the <a href="http://www.pollstarpro.com/charts/2011YearEndTop25NorthAmericanTours.pdf" target="_blank">Top 25</a> in North America. British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five. Also making Pollstar's worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon. <i>Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? Ludacris Taps Usher For Upcoming Spring Album

‘I’d say we’re maybe about 40 percent done,’ Luda tells Billboard about his Ludaversal.
By Rob Markman

<P>Are you ready for another <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/ludacris/artist.jhtml">Ludacris</a> album? It's been two years since 'Cris dropped his last album, <i>Battle of the Sexes,</i> and the Atlanta MC estimates that his next one will hit stores this spring. "I get the beats together and I put out my ideas, so I'd say we're maybe about 40 percent done," the rapper told <a href="http://www.billboard.com/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story#/column/the-juice/ludacris-eyes-spring-ludaversal-release-1005831952.story" target="_blank"><i>Billboard</i></a> of his upcoming eighth LP, <i>Ludaversal,</i> which he anticipates will be out around May with a first single dropping in March. Luda, who dropped his <a href="/news/articles/1674369/ludacris-1.21-gigawatts-mixtape.jhtml"><i>1.21 Gigawatts</i> mixtape</a> in November, also revealed one big-time guest on the LP. "<a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/usher/artist.jhtml">Usher</a> is one person that I've already worked with," he said. "In terms of other artists, you can say that there's going to be a lot of surprises on here." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:711235/cp~id%3D1674412%26vid%3D711235%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A711235" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></center> The pair already have a few collaborations under their belt. Who can forget Usher's inescapable smash "Yeah!" from his 2004 <i>Confessions</i> album? The two also hooked up on Lil Jon's "Lovers and Friends" in the same year and then again two years ago on Usher's "She Don't Know." As far as what the two have cooked up for <i>Ludaversal,</i> fans will just have to wait and see. Throughout his career, Luda has shown a ton of versatility. An undeniable hitmaker, at times the nimble-tongued lyricist has been comical (2001's "Area Codes" and 2004's "Number One Spot") and in other instances delivered healthy amounts of substance (2006's "Runaway Love" and 2008's "Do the Right Thing"). For <i>Ludaversal,</i> he will get a little personal. "It's been a minute since I've been away from music, and there is just so much to talk about," he said. "So [the album] is mostly about my personal life, my travels, my experiences, rumors, gossip &#8212; you know, everything coming together in one." <i>What are your expectations for Ludacris' new album? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Lady Gaga’s Big 2012: A Psychic Weighs In

‘This tour is going to be really good for her,’ psychic Jesse Bravo says of Gaga’s planned 2012 BTW Ball.
By MTV News Staff

Lady Gaga
Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images

<P>As 2012 rolls along, <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Lady Gaga</a> has already teased she has some <a href="/news/articles/1676582/pop-culture-news-2012-beyonce-lady-gaga.jhtml">big plans</a> ahead. So MTV News decided to look to New York-based psychic Jesse Bravo to see what fate has in store for the pop superstar. Bravo recently rolled up to the MTV News offices and looked into his crystal ball. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:722498.id:1676617" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "Lady Gaga for 2012, it's going to be sort of a slower year for her because she has her tour, which means she's not putting out a lot of new material," Bravo explained, despite Gaga's tease that she is working on her <a href="/news/articles/1675458/lady-gaga-next-album.jhtml">follow-up to 2011's <i>Born This Way</i></a>. "So for me, when I sort of looked up around there to see what was happening for her, I saw her sales sort of slow down because of new material. But she's also building up this new momentum for running her base for this tour. This tour is going to be really good for her." Gaga has already thought about the <a href="/news/articles/1675649/lady-gaga-born-this-way-tour.jhtml"><i>Born This Way</i> Ball</a>, tweeting over the holidays that she was pondering the things she wants to sell on tour. "Designing merch for the tour, when you see it you will die. <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/ladygaga/status/152392027093483520" target="_blank">#deathbyinexpensiveglamour</a>," she wrote. Mother Monster is also famously known for her wild style, which Bravo said won't disappoint in the next 12 months. "I believe her next big outfit is a cross between two things, and I was sort of stuck in between, like, where I should go with this because I saw two outfits, which means they can come in succession," he said. "I don't know which one is going to come first. But I will believe the one that I saw is this outfit, and I can't really describe it, but it's going to have lights embedded in it. So it's going to be pretty bizarre. And then I saw another outfit and it's like a body outfit, one that you spray-paint on, and I don't know if it's a stars-and-stripes theme, but I saw that there were stars and stripes in the right areas." In addition to all the ups in her career, Gaga's personal life will also prosper, according to Bravo, which means that she may get even more serious with her rumored beau and "You and I" co-star, "Vampire Diaries" actor Taylor Kinney. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:722468.id:1676617" width="240" height="211"></div><p> "Her personal life is going to stay stable for a while. The reason why is that on the outside she shows she's a strong character &#8212; and for business she is &#8212; but on the inside she's a mush. And so as a result, she needs to have her relationship in place, especially right now when she needs that support on going on something that's so big," he said. "Two years is a long, long time [to tour]. I don't think that relationship is going … it's not going out." Just how serious might they get? Well, Gaga, believe it or not, is already pondering a family, according to Bravo. (Although she did note in a recent interview that the only family she is focused on is <a href="/news/articles/1676799/beyonce-baby-lady-gaga.jhtml">her new music</a>.) "I also feel this need of having children. So I don't know how this is going to play because we know she has a tour and she's not going to stop the tour short to have a child," Bravo predicted. "And I know that work is on her mind, but I know that [her spirit guide] Liberace is telling me about a child. And I know that in the back of her mind, she wants one. I think with her, it's about scheduling … and I would say we're looking somewhere at 2014-2015. That's going to be her time." <i>What do you think about Jesse Bravo's predictions for Lady Gaga? Tell us in the comments!</i></p>

Lady Gaga’s ‘Born This Way’ ‘Sounds Very Familiar’ To Madonna

‘I certainly think she references me a lot in her work,’ Queen of Pop tells ABC News.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>There was a hot debate raging about 12 months ago when Lady Gaga dropped her song <a href="/news/articles/1657726/lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">"Born This Way,"</a> with people questioning whether the song sounds too much like Madonna's 1980s hit "Express Yourself." As the discussion went viral, fans, critics and even Lady Gaga herself weighed in on it. Now, as Madge preps the release of her next album, <a href="/news/articles/1677103/madonna-album-mdna.jhtml"><i>M.D.N.A.</a>,</i> and her film "W.E.," she's <i>finally</i> weighing in on the controversy. Madonna, known for her curt, pithy responses when asked about anyone who might take a cue or two from her playbook, sat down with <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/entertainment/2012/01/madonna-breaks-silence-on-gaga-born-this-way-controversy-2020-exclusive-tonight/" target="_blank">ABC News</a> recently and had some choice words for pop's latest princess. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she explained of her <a href="/news/articles/1622985/lady-gaga-madonna-almost-kiss-on-saturday-night-live.jhtml">onetime "Saturday Night Live" co-star</a>. "When I heard ['Born This Way'] on the radio … I said, 'that sounds very familiar' … It felt reductive." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:717952/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D717952%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A717952%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center> When asked if "reductive" was good or bad, Madonna replied, "Look it up." The Queen of Pop did call Gaga "a very talented artist" and explained that she thinks that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the Zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it." Madonna also addressed her apparent penchant for kissing female pop stars. She recently made headlines when her <a href="/news/articles/1676052/madonna-gimme-all-your-luvin-single.jhtml">"Gimme All Your Luvin"</a> cohort Nicki Minaj tweeted that Madge had <a href="/news/articles/1675587/nicki-minaj-madonna-give-me-all-your-love.jhtml">kissed her</a> on the set of her video. In true Madonna fashion, she brushed it off, saying, "It was her birthday. I gave her a birthday kiss. No tongue!" Of course, Nicki is not the first pop star Madonna has locked lips with. Back in 2003, Madge shared kisses on the VMA stage with Britney Spears <i>and</i> Christina Aguilera. "Nice moment, good kisser. Cool," she <a href="http://idolator.com/6137151/madonna-nightline-interview-britney" target="_blank">remarked</a> of Spears. When asked if she would kiss Spears again, she replied, "No, I already did it. I don't like to repeat myself." For those who may have missed the "Nightline" interview on Thursday, it will air on Friday night (January 13) on "20/20." <center><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:686557/cp~id%3D1672718%26vid%3D686557%26uri%3Dmgid%3Auma%3Avideo%3Amtv.com%3A686557%26instance%3Dmtv" width="460" height="260" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullScreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" base="." flashVars=""></embed></center></p>

Justin Bieber Kicks Off New Year With New Track

Pop star debuts ‘Happy New Year,’ a swaggerfied slow jam featuring Jaden Smith.

<P><P><P><P>Justin Bieber isn't new to creating holiday songs using his new-millennium, R&B swagger, as evidenced on his Christmas album, <a href="/news/articles/1671983/justin-bieber-christmas-album-under-the-mistletoe.jhtml"><i>Under The Mistletoe</i></a>. And this weekend, he gave New Year's a try. The singer <a href="https://twitter.com/#!/justinbieber/status/153329259757318145" target="_blank">tweeted</a> a New Year's-themed track, "Happy New Year," which features his pal Jaden Smith rapping. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:702340.id:1672718" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The slow jam is certainly swaggerfied but also reflective, featuring lyrics that both play up the singer's pop-star image and look ahead to a more hopeful year. "I'm gonna make your cheeks red when I kiss your neck/Girl I'm never leavin' 'cause you are the best baby," he sings. "I wanna give you everything/Never feel 'cause girl you're coming home with me." In a spoken breakdown, he says, "2012 is the year to be better, stronger and closer to the people around you. So grab someone special, and just, you know." Smith also shows some bad-boy personality and proves that rapping runs in the Smith DNA. He raps, " 'Cause 2012 is the year of the love/And we gon' start it off/We can get a plane today and get a car toma'/We don't do it small at all/No girl tell me what I gotta to do/I can be the beat that you rockin' to/I can do anything, nothing is impossible, especially with you girl/And I never need a new girl/This love is true girl/Aye welcome to the crew girl." Not only was Bieber gracing fans with new tracks over the weekend, but he also took the stage during "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve 2012" in Times Square, not far from where his lady love Selena Gomez was <a href="/news/articles/1676633/new-year-selena-gomez-mac-miller.jhtml">hosting "NYE in NYC 2012."</a> The twosome later partied together at Glass House, <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/marc_malkin/justin_bieber_selena_gomezs_late_night/283450" target="_blank">E! News</a> reports. A source says, "He…danced with Selena, showing off, picking her up and swinging her around like it was 'Dancing With the Stars.' " Bieber recently debuted another track<a href="/news/articles/1676443/justin-bieber-be-alright-new-song.jhtml">"Be Alright,"</a> during his holiday special, "Justin Bieber: Home For The Holidays." He's expected to drop his <a href="/news/articles/1675015/justin-bieber-new-album.jhtml">new album, <i>Believe</i></a>, later this year. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mtvnews"target="_blank"><b><i>Want Exclusive Justin Bieber News and Video? Britney Spears Hosts As Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, More Bring Wango Tango To L.A.

Pitbull, Matthew Morrison, Selena Gomez, Far East Movement and others filled the Staples Center on Saturday night.

<P><b>LOS ANGELES</b> &#8212; <a href="/music/artist/spears_britney/artist.jhtml">Britney Spears</a> makes headlines at concerts, even when she's not performing. That's probably why Los Angeles radio station KIIS FM tapped the pop princess to guest-host their annual Wango Tango music festival along with Ryan Seacrest on Saturday night at the Staples Center. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:652696" width="240" height="211"></div><p> The bill was a balance of pop and hip-hop, with acts like Ke$ha, Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, Ne-Yo, Selena Gomez, "Glee" 's Matthew Morrison, Lupe Fiasco, T-Pain, Jason Der&#252;lo, Far East Movement, New Boyz, Cobra Starship and newcomer Cody Simpson. Backstage, the media room went into a frenzy when Spears arrived in a red, geometric-print dress and a beaming smile. Owning her "femme fatale" moniker, Spears worked the carpet for a few moments while all of the cameras in the room were pointing at her. It was the second red carpet appearance by Brit this week, after her Beverly Hills benefit on Wednesday night for <a href="/news/articles/1663732/britney-spears-st-bernard-project.jhtml">the St. Bernard Project</a>. <a href="/photos/keha-britney-spears-selena-gomez-and-many-more-at-wango-tango-2011/1663910/6129255/photo.jhtml"><b>Check out photos from Wango Tango 2011.</b></a> Spears' <i>Femme Fatale</i> collaborator <a href="/news/articles/1639312/justin-bieber-usher-ignite-crowd-at-kiis-fms-wango-tango.jhtml">Ke$ha, who was returning to the festival</a> for the second time, said that an onstage collab between to the two would have to require one thing. "That would have to include me finding her and attacking her," Ke$ha told MTV News, with the best intentions. "I'm planning on pouncing her." While that never happened, at least not onstage, Ke$ha delivered on her promise of a set heavy on her glitter gun. And she assured us she knew the dos and don'ts of handling that kind of firepower. "Do not spray yourself in the face with it," she said. "Do spray everybody else with it. That's pretty much it." While Joe Jonas wasn't performing at the show, he took a break from recording his solo debut to catch up with almost everyone backstage. "I didn't see Britney backstage, just said 'hello' to a couple of my friends," Jonas said. "Backstage is always [full of] people, especially having it at the Staples Center this time, I think compared to all the way out in the desert, it changes everything." Also happy to have Wango Tango in Los Angeles were locals Far East Movement. "Man, we grew up literally a few blocks away from here, and you can only imagine basketball games being played here," Kev Nish said. "So to come in here as performers, to be able to do our songs in this arena is a little crazy. We used to pass out CDs a few blocks [away], so we're very thankful. And the lineup is nuts, so we're extremely excited to be a part of this lineup." <i>Were you at Wango Tango? Share your experience in the comments below!</i></p>

‘Twilight: The Musical’ Vamps In New York

Harry, Ron and Hermione make ‘Twilight’ debut in the off-Broadway parody.
By Amy Wilkinson

The cast of “Twilight: The Musical”
Photo: Dreamcatcher Entertainment

Tyga’s ‘Rack City’ Is ‘Beneficial’ To Strippers, Wale Says

‘I’m just happy that I can be a part of a record that’s making so many young, ambitious dancers so much money,’ Wale quips on remix video set.

Radio, music videos, mixtapes and digital presence are all fine gauges of what’s hot in hip-hop, but the set lists at gentlemen’s clubs should never be overlooked.

At the moment, Tyga‘s “Rack City” seems to be the current strip-club crown holder, and now with the remix video featuring Wale and Fabolous coming, the record doesn’t appear to be losing steam any time soon.

“I’m just happy that I can be a part of a record that’s influencing and making so many young, ambitious dancers so much money,” Wale playfully told MTV News from the set of Tyga’s remix video in Miami.

This past Friday, Tyga gathered Wale and Fab to shoot their portion of the “Rack City” video. On set, the trio joked about how the track keeps strip clubs open for business.

“I think it’s important that we continue to make songs like this, because it’s keeping the whole game of … ,” Wale started before completely losing his train of thought.

“The cycle of the economy,” Loso chimed in.

“It’s very beneficial to so many young women across the country,” Wale picked back up. “The strip clubs are stress relief. Welcome to Rack City!”

Tyga just nodded in agreement. “Everything they said,” he added with a laugh.

The DJ Mustard-produced track is slated to appear on Tyga’s upcoming Young Money debut Careless World. The song’s original was adapted from the “Grand Theft Auto” series of video games. In the clip, which weaves a campy crime tale with performance shots, Tyga plays an out-of-luck bandit who steals from the fictional Rack City’s underworld boss, Mr. Rose.

What are you expecting from the “Rack City” remix video? Let us know in the comments!

Mary J. Blige Dishes On Her ‘Crazy’ Led Zeppelin Covers

‘I’ve listened to their music since I was a child,’ says the R&B diva, who recorded ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and ‘Whole Lotta Love.’
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Larry Carroll

Photo: MTV News

<P>You wouldn't peg Mary J Blige as the black-light-and-tapestry sort, but, as has become readily apparent in recent weeks, she absolutely loves Led Zeppelin. In early February, reports began circulating that <a href="/news/articles/1631297/mary-j-blige-records-led-zeppelins-stairway-to-heaven.jhtml">Blige had re-recorded Zeppelin's classic "Stairway to Heaven,"</a> working with Travis Barker, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson and guitarist Steve Vai on the track, which is slated to appear on the international reissue of her <i>Stronger With Each Tear</i> album, due Monday. </p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float:left;"><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtv.com:491065" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="configParams=instance%3Dnews%26vid%3D491065" allowFullScreen="true" wmode="transparent" allowScriptAccess="always" base="."></embed></div><p> But after she had recorded "Stairway," Blige continued to get the Led out, covering <i>another</i> Zeppelin classic &#8212; the thunderous "Whole Lotta Love" &#8212; for the album too. And when MTV News caught up with her on the <i>Essence</i> Black Women in Hollywood red carpet, she told us all about channeling her inner Robert Plant for the tracks, a process that came much easier than you'd probably imagine. "I did Led Zeppelin's 'Stairway to Heaven' and 'Whole Lotta Love' &#8212; it's crazy," she said. "I am a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm not going to say I've been to their concerts, but I've listened to their music since I was a child, and it's always moved me, especially 'Stairway to Heaven,' and 'Whole Lotta Love' is just fun." Blige also said she recorded another new song &#8212; a "club record" called "I Can't Wait" &#8212; for the re-release. And while it's only slated to hit shelves outside the U.S., she hopes her fans will get a chance to hear all the new songs pretty soon. "I want y'all to hear it," she laughed.</p>

Madonna Praises Lady Gaga’s ‘Rawness’

Queen of Pop opens up about the Mother Monster on ‘The Graham Norton Show.’
By Jocelyn Vena

Madonna
Photo: Jon Furniss/ WireImage

<P>Here in the States, <a href="/news/articles/1677260/madonna-lady-gaga-born-this-way.jhtml">Madonna sat down with ABC News</a> and had some <i>interesting</i> comments about Lady Gaga. In another <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=ukTFzM6Wfdg" target="_blank">interview</a>, on Friday's (January 13) <a href="http://www.bbcamerica.com/the-graham-norton-show/" target="_blank">"The Graham Norton Show,"</a> the singer seemed to take the high road and likened her early days of hustling in New York City to <a href="/music/artist/lady_gaga/artist.jhtml">Gaga</a>'s beginnings. "When I first saw her, I saw her performing at a very small club in Manhattan a couple of years ago, maybe it was like three years ago," she said. "I was actually really impressed by her. I thought she was really cool and she did remind me of me back in the day. I liked her rawness and there was something fresh about there and ballsy, and when she spoke to the audience, she sounded like she had a similar sense of humor to me, quite ironic, and I liked her. So I do think she is very talented." That was really the end of the subject during their chat, other than when Madonna teased the British talk-show host about naming his dog after her. However, when he said his other dog was named Bailey, she quipped, "Not Gaga?" Some of that sentiment was mirrored in Madge's ABC interview, the rest of which airs on Friday's night's <i>20/20</i>. While she did call Gaga's "Born This Way" song "reductive" when asked about comparisons to her own "Express Yourself," she went on to say that she sees a lot of her own work in Gaga's. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well-done," she said, later adding that she thinks Gaga is "a very talented artist" and that she's making a "statement about taking something that was in the zeitgeist, you know, 20 years ago and turning it inside out and reinterpreting it." Madonna is currently making the rounds promoting her next album, <a href="/news/articles/1677103/madonna-album-mdna.jhtml"><i>M.D.N.A.,</i></a> as well as <a href="/news/articles/1674125/madonna-we-film-delayed.jhtml">her film "W.E."</a> <i>What do you think of Madonna's Gaga thoughts? Can ‘American Idol’ Soar Again? Experts Weigh In

In season 11, show faces increased competition from ‘The Voice.’
By Gil Kaufman

Photo: Michael Becker / FOX

Back in the day when “American Idol” was the lumbering 800-pound gorilla of the reality-singing-competition world, it was hard to imagine a time when the top-rated show on TV could ever be toppled.

But like any smashingly popular series that eventually loses some of its luster (see “Lost,” “Deal or No Deal” and “Two and a Half Men”), this year, “Idol” is facing a turning point of sorts. Still a ratings juggernaut, season 11 of the show will launch Wednesday night in an atmosphere ripe with other singing shows that could start nipping at its heels.

“For nine years, ‘Idol’ had the entire airwaves to itself with lesser rivals like ‘Nashville Star’ … [but now] the world feels much more cluttered with singing shows,” said veteran entertainment journalist Richard Rushfield, author of “American Idol: The Untold Story.”

Among the shows Rushfield pointed to are former “Idol” judge Simon Cowell’s recently concluded “X Factor,” NBC’s “The Voice” (which launched in late April last year but will debut after the Super Bowl on February 5) and NBC’s Broadway musical drama “Smash,” which stars “Idol” alum Katharine McPhee and Debra Messing (February 6).

Even with all those shows competing for eyeballs and threatening to create singing fatigue, Rushfield still feels “Idol” has a good chance of continuing its ratings dominance. “This year, after ‘The Voice’ and ‘X Factor,’ I think it’s really clear what slice of the pie ‘Idol’ has and that they’re all very different shows going after very different audiences,” he said. “‘Factor was making a very deliberate attempt to position itself as young and contemporary for an audience more open to an edgier, harsher show, and ‘Idol’ has doubled down on being the middle-American, older, feel-good, soft, nonthreatening show.”

While ratings did continue their slow decline last year, “Idol” remained the overall champ, even as some critics complained about the sometimes too-sunny face put on by new judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez.

As “Idol” prepares to bombard viewers with eight audition episodes featuring the predictable mix of potential stars and wackadoodle nobodies over the next month, Village Voice music editor Maura Johnston suggested perhaps it’s time the show’s runners take a look around and tweak the formula.

“One thing the success of ‘The Voice’ speaks to is that people want the action to start earlier,” she said of the two-and-out round of blind auditions held by the competing show last season. “The audition episodes on ‘Idol’ get ratings … but at the same time, it’s grueling. ‘The Voice’ was so exciting because they put the competition and head-to-head stuff in so early.”

Ratings history has shown that as programs like “Idol” continue on into their double-digit years, their audience invariably get older. The show has also failed to launch another superstar on the rank of winners Kelly Clarkson or season four’s Carrie Underwood, with last year’s winner, country teen Scotty McCreery, becoming the first platinum-selling champ since season seven’s David Cook.

With “The Voice” and “X Factor” both putting a more musically and racially eclectic roster of winners and top finishers in the mix, is this the year the “four cute white guys in a row” factor might catch up with “Idol”?

Johnston doesn’t think so. “One thing ‘Idol’ is speaking to over the past couple of years is the hunger among a certain demo for male pop singers who aren’t operating in a hip-hop idiom, but in a more guitar-centric way,” she said.

There was a fear that with main meanie Cowell gone, viewers might turn their backs en masse at the sunshiny vibe of Tyler and Lopez, but Rushfield said that “Idol” could end up like such perennial ratings-getters as the World Series, sticking around year-after-year through ratings booms and busts. “It could lose two-thirds of its audience and still be a strong hit show by contemporary standards,” he said. “They found their most successful singer in half a decade, so you can’t look at it as on the course of decline. [With Tyler and Lopez] it also has new life, but the only question is … is there just singing-competition fatigue?”

Get your “Idol” fix on MTV News’ “American Idol” page, where you’ll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.

<P>In 2011, we shuffled and shook it out. We found love and decided to dance until the world ends. We rolled in the deep and celebrated the boys with the booming systems. Shoot, at one point, we even went to <a href="/news/articles/1673975/will-ferrell-jay-z-kanye-west-watch-the-throne.jhtml">Paris with Will Ferrell</a>. It was, to say the very least, an <i>interesting</i> 12 months. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="id:1675898" width="240" height="211"></div><p> So, how else to sum up the year than with my picks for the 25 <a href="http://www.mtv.com/specials/best_of">Best Songs of 2011</a>: odes to partying and pumped-up kicks, songs of sadness and beauty, tunes about getting loaded and getting revenge. Pop, hip-hop, rock, bed-tronica, they're all here, and they're all important in some way, mostly because they all helped guide us through a rather tumultuous time. But that's enough from me, let's get to the songs. Oh, and I'd like to hear your picks too &#8212; drop me a line in the comments below. So now, on with the countdown. <b>25. Nicola Roberts, "Beat of My Drum"</b>: Supremely saccharine single from erstwhile Girls Aloud member mashes together every notable pop moment in recent history, yet somehow manages to be better that the sum of its parts. That's thanks mostly to the supercharged, sing-a-long chorus, where the whole thing comes together in a head-spinning rush. She should go solo more often. <b>24. Against Me!, "Russian Spies"</b>: Searing, surging punk from Gainesville lifers proves their time on Sire Records didn't soften them one bit. It only made them more resolute. And, strangely, sadder too. <b>23. Kreayshawn, "Gucci Gucci"</b>: Either the smartest song of 2011 or the dumbest, the beauty of "Gucci Gucci" &#8212; and Kreayshawn, for that matter &#8212; is that the answer is probably both. The goofy, horror-movie synth squiggle, the dollops of low-end whomp, the part where Kreay claims to have swag coming out her ovaries … it's all good. Even if it's not. <b>22. Gospel Music, "This Town Doesn't Have Enough Bars for Both Of Us"</b>: Peppy, poppy, pocket-rock that laments the lack of quality drinking establishments in Owen Holmes' hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, and dares to ponder one of life's great post-breakup quandaries: When does <i>our</i> place become just <i>my</i> place? He's not smart enough to know the answer; instead, he spends his genius on barroom <i>bon mots</i> like, "I'm not drinking anymore/ But I'm not drinking any less." Works for me. <b>21. Demi Lovato, "Skyscraper"</b>: For about a week, this was the biggest song in the world (or the Internet), a fact that had nothing to do with irony, our nascent sense of superiority or kittens, and everything to do with the startling connection Lovato makes with the track itself. Oh, and the fact that she sings the absolute <i>beejezus</i> out of it. Given everything that's <a href="/news/articles/1651297/demi-lovato-enters-treatment-center-leaves-tour.jhtml">happened in Lovato's life</a>, that connection makes sense, but it's the maturity she shows on the song &#8212; and that final, chill-inducing chorus &#8212; that opened eyes, and served notice. Welcome to the club, Demi. <b>20. Lykke Li, "Get Some"</b>: Overlooked, otherworldly single off Li's equally overlooked (and otherworldly) <i>Wounded Rhymes</i> album, this one is very much about sex. Thumping, bumping, panting … and then Li pushes it all over the top with her smoldering, sumptuous vocals. The kind of song that requires a cigarette and a cold shower after repeat listens. <b>19. The Black Keys, "Lonely Boy"</b>: After spending portions of their breakout <i>Brothers</i> album getting slightly contemplative, the Keys roar back with "Lonely Boy," a song that only contemplates how best to make a guitar rev like a V-8 engine. A hard-charging, and even harder-chugging treat (with an equally <a href="/news/articles/1673294/black-keys-lonely-boy-derrick-tuggle.jhtml">hard-partying music video</a>), it's the kind of classic claptrap you always knew they were capable of making. <b>18. Chris Brown, "Beautiful People"</b>: Folks can talk about <a href="/news/articles/1675822/best-mtv-live-performances-2011.jhtml">Brown's hip-hop turn on "Look at Me Now,"</a> but this single represents his biggest reinvention to date. A slippery, shiny club track helmed by Benny Benassi, like most of Breezy's work it is undeniably sexy, but it's also subtly smart too. And that's where he made his biggest strides. Also, unlike "Look at Me Now," he doesn't even mention Mr. Miyagi once. <b>17. YACHT, "Dystopia (The Earth Is on Fire)"</b>: Every day the sky gets lower (lowerlowerlower!) And every day the flames get higher (higherhigherhigher!) So, with apologies to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Roof_Is_on_Fire target="_blank">Rock Master Scott and the Dynamic Three</a>, this disco duo just decide to let the motherf—er burn. <b>16. Washed Out, "Eyes be Closed"</b>: Massively ebbing and echoing bed-tronica (or, you know, "chillwave") from some dude in Perry, Georgia. Bonus: Sounds nothing like Perry, Georgia. <b>15. Lil Wayne, "6 Foot 7 Foot"</b>: <a href="/news/articles/1662974/lil-wayne-6-foot-7-foot-bangladesh.jhtml">Weezy and producer Bangladesh may still</a> hate each other (or maybe they've made up, I can't remember), but there's no denying that both men are better off together. "6 Foot" starts with Harry Belafonte's "The Banana Boat Song," then twists it into something else entirely. Knotty and slightly seizure-inducing, it's like "A Milli" times, well, a million. <b>14. Nicki Minaj, "Super Bass"</b>: The unlikely champion of the Summer Jam Sweepstakes, it started life almost as an afterthought (a bonus track on the <i>Pink Friday</i> deluxe edition) and ended up being Nicki's breakthrough hit. Sometimes things just work out that way. Here's to the guys with the booming systems. <b>13. <a href="/news/articles/1675846/lmfaos-party-rock-anthem-a-big-thing-in-2011.jhtml">LMFAO, "Party Rock Anthem"</a></b>: It's either the stoopidest song in recent memory, or perhaps LMFAO's magnum opus (or maybe both), but why ponder points like that when the end result is this good. From its ebola-catchy hook to party-hearty machinations, this one is just begging to be blasted … and shuffled to. <b>12. Foster The People, "Pumped Up Kicks"</b>: The year's catchiest rock tune was actually <i>last year</i>'s catchiest too &#8212; it just took folks a while to realize it. Hazy, loping and scratchy like a mohair sweater, it recalls a headier era when bands wrote ultra-hooky singles about ultra-dark things (Eels' "Novocaine for the Soul," the Smashing Pumpkins' "Today," etc.) and earned repeated spins on radio as a result. Also known as the 1990s. <b>11. Rihanna, "We Found Love"</b>: A few weeks ago, someone told me that <i>this</i> would ultimately end up being Rihanna's signature hit and, at the time, I sort of laughed him off. I mean, did he remember "Umbrella"? But, the more I think about it, he may be right. Or at least on the right track. From the icy synth strains to <a href="/news/articles/1675353/rihanna-talk-that-talk.jhtml">Calvin Harris' hard-charging</a> pre-chorus, it most certainly is the song that <i>best</i> represents pop, circa 2011, and given RiRi's standing in the field, perhaps in time, it will become her set-closing number too. For now, at least, I'm content to bask in "Love's" masterful mix of the carnal and, well, the club. <b>10. Britney Spears, "Till the World Ends"</b>: I have been accused (many times) of being a Brit basher and, sure, that's probably true, but not even <i>I</i> could deny this song. Super-charged star-burst synthesizers, robo-vocals and, of course, that iconic "Woah-Oh-Oh" chantalong, it's <i>the</i> party jam for the post-apocalyptic future. And because of all that, it's also an important song; not only a reminder that Britney is still capable of making truly terrific pop music, but that, really, she never stopped. And coming from one of her most ardent critics, that's high praise indeed. <b>09. Beyonc&#233;, "Love on Top"</b>: You wanted a throwback jam, you've got a throwback jam. Big, bold, brassy and blissed-out, it represents everything B was going for on her <i>4</i> album, recalling roiling old R&B classics and the supreme diva-tude of the all-time greats. Sure, I could've gone for something like "Run the World (Girls)" or even "Countdown," but "Love on Top" is where it all <i>clicks,</i> sublimely so. Joy for days, which, given our dire times, made this one an absolute lifesaver. Oh, and as is the case with all of her best tunes, Beyonc&#233; <i>belts</i> here. And really, what else do you need? <b>08. Nickelback, "Bottoms Up"</b>: Take away my cred card, but I am unapologetically in awe of this song. I wrote an entire column about its boozy brilliance earlier this year, but suffice to say, it is without a doubt the <a href="/news/articles/1673594/nickelback-bottoms-up-here-and-now.jhtml">greatest thing Nickelback</a> will ever do, in that they are first and foremost a party band, and this is their ultimate party jam: a song about getting supremely sh–faced, about drinking everything from Jim Beam to "straight gasoline," complete with a crushing, ALL-CAPS chorus and appropriately chugging riffs. Oh, and at one point, Chad Kroeger rhymes "bar" with "fire," mostly because he can. Hammer down, now and forever. <b>07. Bright Eyes, "The Ladder Song"</b>: For as much noise as Conor Oberst is capable of making, it's often the quieter moments where his rickety, ramshackle genius shines brightest. And "Ladder Song" &#8212; a heartbreakingly raw tribute to a friend who committed suicide &#8212; is not only his quietest, it's one of his best. Backed by little more than a piano and a handful of otherworldly room tones, Oberst plumbs the depths of despair, his voice reedy and wavering, and, when he reaches bottom, discovers there are small beauties that make life worth living. It's too bad, he ultimately laments, that his friend didn't discover them too. The year's most achingly beautiful song, by a hair-raising mile. <b>06. Drake, "Take Care"</b>: There are no short</p>

Astro Signs With ‘X Factor’ Mentor L.A. Reid

Teenage MC will be on today’s ‘RapFix Live’ at 4 p.m. on MTV.com to discuss his new deal with Epic Records.

Astro might not have taken home top honors on “X Factor,” but the 15-year-old Brooklyn MC scored a huge win nonetheless. MTV News has exclusively learned that the Astronomical Kid signed a deal with “X Factor” mentor L.A. Reid over at Epic Records. The young rap phenom will appear on today’s “RapFix Live” to formally announce the deal in detail.

After the teenage rapper was sent home during the show’s December 1 episode, rumors began to swirl about where he would end up. Reports that ‘Stro would sign with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation hit the Web early, but in an interview with MTV News, the pint-size MC quickly shot that notion down.

“I have never met anyone from Roc Nation. I’d love to, but I’m not signed right now to anyone,” he said during a December 5 interview. “Nobody ever hit me up about that — just go on the Internet and it’s up there. But I’m not signed, as far as I know.”

Though Hov is one of his favorite rappers, the Brooklyn whiz kid wasn’t necessarily looking to sign based off star power alone. “I just want to be in a place where I’m comfortable 100 percent. I just want to be able to release my music, do my movies, [and] everything is fair,” he told MTV News of his dream deal. “I just want to be able to have fun doing it. I don’t want music to be a job for me; I want it to be something I’m doing for fun. As long it’s not a job, then you’re straight.”

It seems that Reid has provided the youngster with everything he was looking for. No word yet on when Astro will drop his debut album, but then again, at 15 years old, he has all the time in the world.

What do you think of Astro’s deal with Epic Records? Tell us in the comments!

Catch Astro, Naughty by Nature and Khalil Kain on “RapFix Live” today at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com, and be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists @MTVRapFiX!

Ashley Hebert Calls Out Bachelor Mean Girls

“A classic case of mean-girlism.” Ashley Hebert on The Bachelor

The effervescent Hebert, a former contestant on The Bachelor herself before going on to be The Bachelorette, weighed in on the current season’s craziness this week.

“I have so many thoughts on last night’s show,” she told E! “First of all, how mean can these girls be?! It was a classic case of mean-girlism, that’s all I have to say.”

Of the other girls’ “below the belt” comments, Ash says, “I cannot believe the way Shawntel was treated by some of the other girls. It absolutely blows my mind.”

One Hot BacheloretteBen Flajnik Photograph

Ashley Hebert feels the women exercised “bad judgment” and urged them to “have a good experience, get to know the other girls, form friendships, you know?”

“That’s probably what you’re going to take away from all this.”

In other words, there’s only one winner. Get used to the idea.

After all, “What guy wants to be with a girl that’s nasty to other people?” Hebert mused.

“You want the girl that you’re with to, you know, get along with your friends, get along with your family … it’s not really a good indication of that.”

“It’s almost as if they’re being competitive. If you’re in this to be competitive and to beat everyone else, then you’re kind of wasting everyone’s time.”

In other words, no one wants to be with Courtney Robertson.

‘Twilight: The Musical’: Five Reasons To Go

MTV News’ Amy Wilkinson tells ‘Twilight’ Tuesday that catchy songs, inside jokes make the off-Broadway parody work.
By Kara Warner

For the most dedicated “Twilight” fans, the yearlong wait between the theatrical releases of “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1″ and “Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ is painful, to say the least. Luckily, due to the popularity of the franchise and vampires in general, there are a variety of ways to bridge the gap, a few of which we touched on previously via fan suggestions. These include re-reading the books and re-watching the already-released movies, as well as getting your vampire fix via TV shows like “The Vampire Diaries” and “True Blood.”

The latest addition to the fangtastic fray is the off-Broadway musical parody “Twilight: The Musical.” MTV News’ own Amy Wilkinson was lucky enough to attend the first preview in New York Monday. Thanks to her detailed summary, we now know more about the action in the plot, but for those who want to know more about the show’s potential and audience reactions, this week’s “Twilight” Tuesday is dedicated to digging a little deeper into the production by way of Wilkinson’s experience. This will help you know what to expect if you make the trek to New York to see the show when it officially opens.

Here are five reasons you’ll enjoy “Twilight: The Musical.”

It’s a Parody
Although we take our “Twilight” very seriously, it’s sometimes just as entertaining to make light of the saga’s more melodramatic, overwrought elements. And when a parody is executed well, it can be a delightful companion piece to the source material. It also helps to manage your expectations accordingly.

“To be completely honest, I wouldn’t say that they were incredibly high,” Wilkinson said of her expectations going in. “Mostly because this is an off-Broadway production, and from what we were told when we first arrived, they’d only been practicing for about 24 hours. So I didn’t have the highest expectations going in, but I think for the time they had it turned out really well.”

The “Twilight”/ “Harry Potter” Blend
Yes, Harry, Ron and Hermione make an appearance in “Twilight: The Musical,” and despite the seemingly obvious appeal to two obsessive and proud fanbases, Wilkinson reported that it’s more entertaining than off-putting.

“The way it was used worked well. There might be something that is a bit cloying about it, marrying these two franchises whose fans never seem to get along very well, so it might be a bit baiting in that regard, but I think the way they did it made sense,” she said. “They traded in the three villains in the original ‘Twilight’ for three ‘Harry Potter’ characters and there were some good jokes that came out of it.”

Vampires and Wizards That Sing!
This is a musical after all, so we are happy to hear that the songs, while campy at times, don’t suck. Wilkinson said that one in particular is likely to get stuck in your head, a catchy little ditty called “Die Bella Die.” Apparently and appropriately, it’s Hermione’s villainous theme song.

The Inside Jokes
In addition to dialogue lifted straight from Melissa Rosenberg’s screenplays, the production pokes fun at a few memorable and slightly maligned moments, one of which Wilkinson said stood out for its laugh-out-loud factor.

“The one moment that the entire audience busted a gut over was in reference to a scene from the first ‘Twilight’ movie, when they’re going on the biology class field trip and Alice Cullen is asking Bella if she’s going to ride on their bus. In the movie Robert Pattinson’s Edward is kind of like, ‘Oh no, she’s not,’ but in the production I saw, Colin Hanlon, the guy playing Edward, turned around and yelled as loud as he could, ‘SHE’S NOT COMING!’ I don’t know what it was about that, but the entire audience nearly died. The actor himself was cracking up, everyone was cracking up because it rings true to how bizarre that moment is in the film.”

A Few Stars Are Born
In the spirit of how far “Glee” star Darren Criss has come from his “A Very Potter Musical” days, there are several actors in this musical worth keeping an eye on due to their breakout star potential, like Jenna Leigh Green, Lauren Lopez and Jeffry Denman, who all play multiple roles in the production.

“[Green] is pretty much the MVP of the production,” Wilkinson said. “She does four or five characters (including Hermione, Rosalie and Esme), and there are times when her characters almost have lines back-to-back and she’s running behind the stage to take off a wig or throwing off her cloak to return to the stage and deliver a line. She’s definitely one of the hardest-working people on the stage. She was great to watch.”
